CMC History
“The Community At its Best”, Taking Care of its own
Dr. Bharat Mody, Dr. Asrial and other community leaders saw the need for a program to assist the low-income seniors and working, uninsured adults of Barren County with their medical needs.
In the beginning the program was under the umbrella of Community Relief Fund. The eligibility process was launched in January of 2002 and several CMC Adult Cards were issued.
CMC Adult Cards provided access to primary health care & prescription medications. Pharmacies provided discounts and T. J. Regional Hospital provided health care through their Residency Program at Family Medicine Center.
Summer of 2002 the program became a 501c3, Community Medical Care, Inc. lead by a board of directors.
The initial directors were: Bharat Mody, M.D., Carolyn Fields, Ronnie Doyle, Sue Haynes, Howard Alls, John Murphy & Melanie Watson.
Not long after 9 more community leaders joined including:
Carolyn McKinley, M.D., Brenda Chaney, Mayor Charles Honeycutt, Jake Dickinson, Jon Ballard, Peter Rives, M.D., Mike Padgett, Judge Executive, Freddie Travis & Sheri Lee.
CMC continues to have a strong & supporting board of directors.
Fall of 2002 the programs grew so much and so fast, the need for its own office and office coordinator was realized. Tina Combs has been the office coordinator since September of 2002. The office is also helped daily by many community volunteers.
In April of 2003 the Senior Program was launched. Barren County low-income seniors, 65 and older received assistance with prescription medications. Eventually, the assistance grew to include hearing aids, glasses & dentures.
CMC has always been supported by the community from the beginning, including: individuals, businesses, churches, local government and civic groups and clubs.
Annual fund raising events are a huge part of revenue for Community Medical Care. Two of our main annual fundraisers are The Carol Bailey Memorial Golf Tournament & Extreme Fitness 5K “Run for Health”. |
